What is auto insurance?

Auto insurance is a contract you purchase from an insurance company that protects you from financial loss if you have an accident or if your car gets stolen. You agree to pay a premium dollar amount and the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as defined in your policy.

Auto insurance is a package policy. It covers your property, which is your car, your personal liability for bodily injury and property damage to others, and medical expenses for other people’s injuries, rehab, loss wages and funeral expenses.

Policies are normally issued for 6 months or 1 year (12 months) and have the option to be renewed. Your insurance company will send you a notice as soon as you have the option to renew your policy and if you wish to renew it for another 6 months/1year then you will need to pay the renewal premium and then your insurance company will continue to take care of you just like they did with your previous policy.

Who is covered under your auto insurance policy?

Your personal auto policy will cover you and any family members listed on your policy. Whether you drive your own car or a car owned by a family member with their permission you are covered under your auto policy. You are also covered if someone not listed on your policy drives your car with your permission.

What activities are covered?

Your personal auto policy covers you for any personal use. Whether you go to and from work or go out and do something fun you are covered. Any commercial use for the purpose of making money is not covered. Using your car for transportation services like Uber or Lyft is not covered. However, some insurance companies will let you purchase a separate endorsement to extend your coverage to cover ride-sharing services.

Is car insurance required in Miami?

Florida Residents:
In the state of Florida, before you register your vehicle you are required to purchase at least $10,000 in PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage and at least $10,000 in PDL (Property Damage Liability) coverage from an insurance company that is licensed to sell insurance in the state of Florida. Please note; if you just moved to Florida you must contact your agent and have your policy transferred to Florida.

If you have a taxi you must purchase at least $50,000 in PDL (Property Damage Liability) coverage and in addition to that, $125,000 per person / $250,000 per occurrence for BIL (Bodily Injury Liability) coverage.

Your coverage must be continuous whether or not your vehicle is being used as long as you have a license plate. However, if you are in the military and are stationed outside of Florida you may be exempt from this rule. If you wish to cancel your auto insurance you must first surrender your license plate.

Non-Florida Residents:
Your vehicle must have a Florida registration and license plate and be insured with an insurance company in Florida if you do the following:

  • Accept employment or conduct any business in the state of Florida
  • Enroll your children in a public school in Florida

After 10 days of either employment or enrollment, you must have your vehicle registration certificate and your license plate for the state of Florida. Your vehicle must also have a Florida certificate of title unless you have an out of state lien holder/lessor holding the title and they will not let you transfer it to Florida.

If Moving Out of Florida:
You must keep your Florida insurance until you either register your vehicle in the state you are moving to or surrender your Florida vehicle registration AND license plate. Note; if you wish to stay with your insurance company they can change your coverage to the state you are moving to when you change your vehicle registration to that state.

Penalties:
If you do not maintain the required amount of insurance coverage throughout the registration period your driving privilege and license plate may be suspended for up to 3 years. If you fail to maintain the required amount of car insurance coverage in Miami, Florida, your driver license and vehicle registration may be suspended, which would in turn, require you to pay a reinstatement fee of up to $500. Please note; for insurance related suspensions there are no provisions for a temporary or hardship driver license

Basic Car Insurance Definitions

Bodily Injury Liability (BIL): Coverage for injury or death to another driver while driving.
Property Damage Liability (PDL): Coverage for other’s property you damage
Personal Insurance Protection (PIP): Coverage for yourself and others in your car.

Why do you need car insurance in Miami?

  • It's really all about protecting yourself financially.
  • If you're in an accident or your car is stolen, it costs money, often a lot of money, to fix or replace it.
  • If you, or any passengers, are injured in an accident, medical costs can be extremely expensive.
  • If you, or your car, are responsible for damage or injury to others, you may be sued for much more than you're worth.
  • Not only is having insurance a prudent financial decision, many states require you to have at least some coverage.

Auto Liability coverage

Liability coverage covers bodily injury to others and property damage to others if you are at fault in an accident. Bodily injury pays others’ medical costs. It can also pay injured parties’ lost wages and your legal expenses. Property damage coverage can also pay for your legal expenses if a lawsuit is brought against you due to an accident.

Comprehensive and Collision coverage

auto insurance miami floridaComprehensive Coverage helps pay for damage to your vehicle not caused by collision. Examples include: damage or loss due to theft, vandalism, falling objects, fire, storms, flood, and certain other natural disasters.

Collision Coverage helps pay for damage to your vehicle if you hit another vehicle, if another vehicle hits you, or if your vehicle rolls over. Collision coverage can be a required part of your car insurance coverage if your vehicle is financed or leased.

Please note that comprehensive and collision coverage do not cover your car for the amount you purchased it for. They only cover its market value; and a car’s value depreciates pretty fast. So if your car is stolen or totaled there may be a gap between your coverage and the amount of money you owe on your vehicle; and if you want to cover that gap, then you will need to purchase gap insurance to pay the difference. However if you leased your vehicle then your gap coverage is probably included into your lease payments.

Auto Glass Coverage

Your comprehensive coverage on your personal auto insurance policy automatically covers damage to the windshield because collision coverage excludes damage to the windshield. If you need to repair your windshield you do not have to pay a deductible but if you need to replace it you will have to pay a deductible. However, you can purchase a separate endorsement to add full glass coverage to your auto insurance policy which will pay for the full replacement cost of the windshield and no deductible needs to be paid.

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage

Helps pay for damages to your vehicle if it is damaged in an accident by an uninsured, underinsured or unidentified driver. Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage also helps pay your medical costs and your passengers’ medical costs if an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver results in injury. This car insurance coverage may also pay for lost wages and other damages.

Medical expenses

Helps pay medical costs for you and your passengers in the event of an accident, regardless of who is at fault.

Personal Injury Protection

PIP is a statutory coverage which provides medical, disability and death benefits for persons injured in or by the insured's vehicles, without regard to fault. Named insureds and their family members are also covered for injuries in or by the vehicles of others.

Rental Car Reimbursement

Helps pay for your rental car or other transportation (such as bus or subway) if your car cannot be driven due to an at–fault accident or comprehensive claim.

Towing and Labor

Reimburses for towing and roadside assistance charges if a vehicle with car insurance coverage is disabled. Typical services include: battery jump-starting, tire changing and locksmith services.
